Solids by Daniel Emma

9 March 2010 | One Comment

The Solids collection by Daniel Emma consists of a Stationery Container, Pencil Box, Desk LIght, Torch, Rubberband Ball, Thermometer, Wall Hook and Wall Clock was launched at 100% Design London 2009, came in a close second at the 2009 Bombay Sapphire Deign Discovery Award and recently exhibited at Shapiro Gallery in Sydney as part of The Australian Design Museum Exhibition.

Our range of products is simple and challenges the current trends in design which often dramatize and embellish what could be left relatively uncomplicated.  Our second series ‘Solids’ which consists of a desk light, pencil box, stationery container, wall hooks, torch, wall clock, and thermometer, show a broad spectrum of applications that our design philosophy employs; that not everything has to be flashy or over the top.  The resolution to the designs expresses our desire to ‘just make things nice’ which is something that every design is entitled to.  The idea of using the solid forms was to create an aesthetic that is in many ways uncharacterized to current trends. This collection has been developed especially to exhibit at 100% Design London.  Essentially this work is a natural progression from ‘Shapes’ (our first collection) however the designs in this series are a little more refined, ideas are more developed, and materials and processes of manufacture are being explored deeper.

Daniel To and Emma Aiston met whilst studying Industrial Design at the University of South Australia. After both graduating in 2007, they spent almost 2 years gaining experience with various design studios such as Phillips, Marc Newson and Thorsten Van Elten in London. After launching their first series together ‘Shapes’ at 100% Design London last year, and then taking the same collection to show during Tokyo Design Week at 100% Design, they returned back home to Adelaide to prepare for their ‘Solids’.
