Serpent & the Swan – A/W 2010 – ‘What Lies Beneath’

30 November 2009 | 3 Comments

Definitely one to watch out for.

SERPENT AND THE SWAN

A fledgling men’s and women’s fashion label in its first season. Designed by two sisters from Sydney, Hayley and Lauri Smith, the label is inspired by a shared childhood love of the animal kingdom and a somewhat dark and morbid fascination with the anatomy of creatures and their alternate mystical incarnations.

With a focus on unique trimmings, each item is adorned with its own inimitable signature, be it a row of handcrafted hummingbird buttons, a double headed wolf brooch, or a horse-head zipper tab, the beauty of this label requires the wearer to look a little deeper than the surface to discover its true worth.

Incorporating their different creative backgrounds and a distinctive shared visual aesthetic, the label aims to offer a collection which is both beautifully designed, and inspired by their own vision, rather than influenced by runway trends.

THE AUTUMN WINTER ’10 COLLECTION

Designed and made in Australia from 100% wool, cotton blends and jersey, the Autumn/Winter ‘10 collection offers a tight range of knitted sweaters, cardigans, waistcoats, zip-up jackets, scarves, leggings and dresses in classic, modern shapes for both men and women.

An earthy colour pallet featuring black, khaki and grey marle is punctuated by a unique feather print in a jersey style for men and women.

Classic sweater, cardigan, waistcoat and jacket shapes are accented by flowing jersey singlet styles and dresses with billowing sleeves. Animal themed trimmings adorn the entire collection with asymmetric zippers and endless rows of hand crafted buttons also present.

A collection of hand crafted, animal inspired resin jewellery has also been designed to complement the collection.

THE DESIGNERS

The designers have had 10 years experience in the fashion industry, designing for some of the world’s top global fashion brands. Lauri Smith comes from a background of fine arts and special effects, which includes the production of prosthetics, props and monster making.
